How to Deploy a LoRa Network for Smart Street Lighting IoT
Deploying a LoRa smart street lighting network takes four steps: plan gateway coverage (about one gateway per 500-1000 nodes) → install concentrators and per-lamp controllers → configure the LoRaWAN band (868/915 MHz) and join settings → commission on the platform and accept. In urban areas one gateway covers up to about 3km.
Step 1: Network Planning and Gateway Placement Plan gateways by lamp density and street layout: dense urban areas need one concentrator (CCU) per 500-1000 nodes, mounted high on poles or rooftops to extend line-of-sight range. Validate signal strength with a field survey (RSSI above -100 dBm recommended) before fixing final gateway positions.
Step 2: Install Per-Lamp Controllers and Concentrators Install per-lamp controllers on the NEMA or Zhaga receptacle (or embedded variants) without powering down. Mount concentrators in distribution cabinets or on poles with 4G uplink and power. Register each device serial number and build the luminaire asset register.
Step 3: Band Configuration and Joining Configure the LoRaWAN band per region: 868 MHz in Europe, 915 MHz in North America, 470-510 MHz in China. Set network keys (AppKey/NwkKey) and prefer OTAA joining. After power-up devices join automatically; confirm the join success rate on the platform.
Commissioning Checks Verify dimming, switching and energy reporting per lamp: send 50% dimming and confirm brightness change on site; check metering against actual power (within ±5%); monitor reporting frequency and packet loss (below 1% recommended).
Acceptance Criteria Join rate ≥ 99%, control command response under 3 seconds, accurate metering, and outage alarms working. Keep the full acceptance report and lamp map as the operation baseline.
