A NEMA street light controller is a smart lighting device built to ANSI C136.41, installed via the 7-pin twist-lock receptacle (3 power + 4 signal) on top of the luminaire. It provides 0-10V dimming, remote on/off, energy metering and fault reporting — the mainstream choice for smart street light retrofits in North America, installable on-site without opening the fixture.
The NEMA Standard and 7-Pin Twist-Lock Interface The NEMA standard (ANSI C136.41) was developed by the North American lighting industry and defines the mechanical and electrical interface of the twist-lock receptacle on top of the luminaire. The 7-pin connector carries 3 power lines (L1/L2/neutral) and 4 signal lines supporting the ANSI C136.10 0-10V dimming protocol. The twist-lock design ensures reliable fixing and weather protection outdoors.
Core Functions: Dimming, Metering and Remote Control A NEMA controller embeds a microprocessor supporting: scheduled and photocell dimming (0-10V analog), voltage/current/power/energy metering (±1% or better), per-lamp on/off control with status reporting, and fault detection (lamp failure, communication loss). Controllers communicate with the concentrator over 4G Cat.1, LoRa or PLC.
4G / LoRa / PLC Networking Choose the communication method by project: 4G Cat.1 connects each lamp directly to the cellular network (scattered deployments); LoRa forms gateway-based mesh networks for dense large-area rollouts (one gateway serves hundreds of nodes); PLC rides on power lines where no extra cabling is available. A concentrator (CCU) aggregates everything to the management platform.
Differences from Zhaga Zhaga Book 18 is the European mainstream standard with a compact 4-pin DALI-2 D4i interface; NEMA uses the 7-pin 0-10V interface and is easier to retrofit. Choose NEMA for North American projects and Zhaga for new European installations.
Compatibility and Deployment NEMA controllers fit most luminaires with a NEMA receptacle, including retrofits on existing poles — no need to open or power down the fixture; typical per-lamp installation takes about 10 minutes. They support standard protocols of mainstream platforms (CACloud, ThingsBoard, etc.).
